Ask the children to think about the sorts of homes
people live in today. Show them pictures of different sorts of homes.
Which are like their home? Which are different? Encourage them to talk
about homes they are familiar with. Ask them to think about why people
live in different sorts of homes. Prepare a template which presents the
children with pictures of different homes. Ask the children to place the
correct labels on the pictures by clicking and dragging. Look at homes near the school. Using a simple painting
program create a picture of their house or another house from the area

After looking at pictures or photographs of seaside
holidays today and in the past, using a simple painting program, create
a picture of seaside holiday. Arrange for a parent/carer/grandparent to visit the
class and tell the children about his or her childhood seaside holidays,
using photographs, slides, artefacts and souvenirs to illustrate the story.
Ask the children to draw each of the souvenirs brought in by the visitor.
Using a WP package ask them to write a caption for their pictures, explaining
what information the souvenir provides about seaside holidays in the past. |

Year 2 |
Search a CD-ROM or the Internet to find pictures of
Florence Nightingale. Give the children a template containing a simple version
of the story of Florence Nightingale. This should use few adjectives.
The story should be broken into separate chapters. Ask the children 1)
to make the story more interesting by adding words from the word bank,
2) to give each chapter a title and 3) to create a final chapter of the

Using a paint program, create a picture showing something
important that they have learnt about the fire. Using a template prepared by the teacher, match beginnings and ends of sentences about the fire. [E.g. The fire spread because of ... the direction of the wind. The people escaped to churches because ... they were built of stone. The fire went out because ... the wind stopped.] Type a label for their picture. |

Search a CD-ROM or the Internet to find out about Roman life, the Celts or Boudicca. Use a WP program which allows them to combine text and graphics to present their findings, inserting images from clipart, CD-ROMs, the Internet or from another file. Create the front page of a Roman or Celtic Newspaper

of Henry VIII and his wives. 1) Choose a picture of Henry, insert it in

Henry's character. 2) Choose a picture of one of his wives and underneath
add a piece of text stating the reasons why Henry married her. Produce newspaper articles bringing together the key
points of this unit. Possibly date the paper on the day after the death
of Henry. Give each group a different wife or marriage to focus on. This

they have learnt about the rich and poor in Tudor times to answer the
key questions: What were the advantages of being rich in Tudor times?

or the Internet to find out what it was like in the Second
World War. Visit news web sites to find out about areas of conflict in
the world today. It may be possible set up an e-mail link with a person
or persons who were children during World War 2. The children could then
then pose questions to this person or persons about their childhood during
the war. Introduce the children to AND and OR searches and take the opportunity to discuss the authenticity of information on the web. Go the Holnet web site. The Second
World War section has a number of prepared activities, all downloadable,
for Y3/4 and Y5/6. The activities are designed to meet the three levels
