The children need to have a firm understanding of the 4 basic number operations. They need have experience of solving simple word problems.

Teaching/Learning Objectives

Pupils should: Use a spread sheet to solve a problem [e.g. How much will I need to save for my Christmas shopping?]. Make decisions. Choose appropriate number operation to solve a problem.

[ICT: Familiarity with spreadsheets. Understand that they can be used to calculate costs. Enter text and numbers into a spreadsheet. Enter formula to find total cost].

Methodology & Organisation

Whole class teaching session followed by children working in pairs. Begin with the children seated in front of a large screen or a reasonable size monitor being taught as a whole class. The children would then work in pairs on task .

Introduction: Discuss idea of working to a budget for a school trip. Show children a spread sheet, how to move around it, enter text and numbers.

Ask children to identify contents of particular cells. Using template of class trip show how spread sheet can be used for calculating costs and budgeting. Explain Task.

Task: Children, in pairs carry out task: enter items and prices into prepared spreadsheet for Xmas shopping list in order to calculate total cost.

Plenary: Gather children back together. Ask children what sum that they would need to do to find a total number. Demonstrate entering a formula for finding a total. [=C1+C2+C3…..]. Children enter formula to calculate cost.
