Creating sentences from key words or phrases

Age range: All

Literacy Focus: Sentence level work

Description

The idea for this activity came from the "NLS Grammar for Writing" guidance and can be adapted to suit your year group and sentence level focus. In section 3 of the document and number of sentence building activities are suggested - Function (p156), Construct (p158) and the Complex sentence game (p159) to name a few. In many of these activities word, sentence or phrase cards are used to create sentences and reinforce sentence level objectives. Here the same activity is modelled on the screen using a word processor. Position the computer next to the carpet area or use a data projector if you have one. Model sentence construction using the wordprocessor instead of cards and washing lines. Not only is this a nice resource and a good use of the classroom computer, but the files can also be printed, enlarged and laminated for children to use at their desks. Small groups of children an also use the file to create sentences which they can print out.
