Adding "ing" to verbs

Using PowerPoint to demonstrate to the whole class

Year group: Year 3

Literacy Objective: Yr 3 Term 1 WLW 8 How the spellings of verbs alter when -ing is added

Description

This is another way of introducing spelling conventions to a whole class of children. It works well with a dataprojector attached to a lap top but is just as good if you use your class computer in front of the carpet area. Clicking on the mouse causes the suffix - ing to "Fly in" from the right of the screen and join the verb. Not only is this visually interesting for children, but it is also very versatile as the initial verbs can be changed. In fact the same technique could be employed to demonstrate and model other spelling conventions and rules. As an extension, small groups of children working with an adult, could create their own slides using a similar technique to demonstrate the -ing verbs they have found in books or dictionaries. A drag and drop activity where by children drag the verb next to the suffix the could also be created to reinforce this teaching point.
