Description

Although there are issues over using spell checkers, the main one being the predominance of American spellings, they can be a very useful tool for children to use when investigating spelling rules and patterns. Incorrect spellings are automatically highlighted by the computer and this encourages children to explore. This is particularly good way of teaching pluralisation and suffixes. In this example children are encouraged to investigate words ending in -ly, using the spell checker to come to a decision about the spelling rule. These activities can be done by small groups of children on the class computer or as a whole class in a suite. Make sure the children are familiar with the software before they try the activity.
