Progression in Phonics: Phonemes

Year group: 2

Literacy objectives: Yr 2 Term 2 WLW 2 the common spelling patterns for the vowel phonemes.

Description

The idea for this lesson comes from the NLS CD-ROM "ICT in the Literacy Hour: Whole class teaching" in which the class teacher uses a data projector and interactive white board to play this "Circle game" which reinforces phonetical awareness. This would work just as well without the interactive whiteboard and even using a large monitor instead of the data projector. The idea is that the words on the left of the screen are created by dragging the letters from the box at the bottom of the screen into the middle box. Once a word has been created, it can be moved from the left hand box to the right hand box. The children should be involved with the dragging and dropping. The activity can be repeated by small groups of children with an adult or can be printed out and used as a paper activity.
