Modelling Poetry Writing

Age range: All

Literacy Objective: A similar activity could be adapted for Fiction and Poetry objectives in all year groups.

Description

In this activity the computer screen (or data projector) is used instead of a big book and white/black board. You can type your own text into a word processor or copy and paste it from another file or website (for example go to http://www.toyomasu.com/haiku/ to find examples of haikus). This is a good way to encourage prediction in reading as only part of the poem can be read out at any time. Once you have entered the original version of the poem, you can then save the file again omitting words, lines or even verses. In this way you can model the poetry writing process by adding the children's suggestions into the adapted poem. The edited versions can be printed and used as a worksheets and the activity can be used by small groups of children at the computer.
