Reinforcing initial letter sounds

For example: What previous knowledge will the pupils have? Will the activity take place in the classroom or in a computer suite?

This activity could take place in a computer suite or a classroom. Children need to have some knowledge of the initial letter sounds, understand that text conveys meaning and have an understanding of how to use a mouse.

Pupils should:

Communicate ideas by assembling sentences and pictures. Understand that ICT can be used to match words and pictures.

Use a mouse to select and move items on screen

Reinforce initial letter sounds.

Template created using a WP software that allows you to combine text and graphics [e.g. Word / AppleWorks] presenting the children with 5 or 6 pictures and beginnings of sentences and ends of sentences in Text Boxes.

Whole class teaching session followed by children working in pairs. Begin with the children seated in front of a large screen or a reasonable size monitor being taught as a whole class. The children would then work in pairs on task .

Introduction: Demonstrate how to open template. Discuss pictures and initial letters of objects shown. Read the start of the sentences together [e.g. Here is a….]. Demonstrate selecting the word and moving it. Identify the correct word to end the first 2 sentences together. Invite children to select and move box into position. Set task.

Task: Select the correct word to end each sentence from the word bank. Move each word into position by clicking and dragging. Use initial letter sounds to identify the correct sound.

Plenary: Gather children together. Discuss work. Read completed sentences together. Demonstrate how to save work. Children save work.

Greater level of support for SEN children

Create extra text boxes so that able children can insert image of their choice and type in own text. (Could create differentiated Templates).
