Background Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a relatively new area. By 1980 the first "microcomputers’ were being used in schools and in 1990 Information Technology (as this field had come to be known, abbreviated to IT.) and was part of the entitlement curriculum of all pupils between 5 and 14 years in maintained schools in England and Wales. With changes to the National Curriculum and the introduction of the National Grid for Learning and the associated New Opportunities Fund Training in the late 1990s the areas of experiences and the capability in the use of new information media had become known generically as Information and Communication Technology, ICT.
