ICT TASK

Using a spreadsheet to explore aspects of batch production in food technology

Year Group: Year 7/8

Resources

Spreadsheet, Food and Nutrition database

Context

Students, working in groups of four, have designed, made and evaluated a nutritional sandwich. They have used a Food and Nutrition database to help their designs.

Students have some experience of using spreadsheets from mathematics lessons, including the use of formulae.

Task Description

Students create a spreadsheet for their sandwiches, incorporating the cost of ingredients, nutritional values of ingredients taken from a Food and Nutrition database and time taken for each sandwich.

The spreadsheet is used to model different situations and will support future discussions on batch production and industrial processes.

Learning Intentions

Design and Technology Knowledge and Understanding ICT Skills, Knowledge and Understanding

ICT level
Research the cost, nutritional values and time to make one round of sandwiches. Scale these up for four rounds. Enter cost, nutritional values and time for one round of sandwiches into a spreadsheet and explore the consequences of their choices.

3
Most students model the cost and time taken to batch produce sandwiches for the group, class and school. Extend model to explore, including predictions, application in different settings taking account of consequences.

4
Some students investigate time and cost saving opportunities of batch production and remodel. Explore the results of changing their models to take account of benefits of scale.

Teaching Approach

The whole class is reminded about spreadsheets and formulae with an example sandwich contrived by the teacher. Students work in groups of four with one student assigned to collect nutritional information from the database while other research cost and time. Mixed ability groups will allow pupils to share expertise with spreadsheets and support each other.
