This is one of four sections containing useful web links for you to explore. This module is literature based and includes many links to set texts. Some of the links provide biographical information on authors and ideas for lesson plans. There are also links to non-literary texts and professional advice on using the Internet in education / English teaching.

Discussion

There are a lot of resources in these sections! Can you share out the research amongst your departmental colleagues? Don't forget the suggestions in the Task at the end.

Project Gutenberg Index This site contains the full text of a massive range of out-of-copyright books. It's especially interested in issues of censorship, and has much discussion of this. http://promo.net/pg/
E-Text Hyperlinks pages (Project Gutenberg) Fairly excellent and esoteric hyperlinks to e-text sites: i.e., sites which have out-of-copyright books on screen, and sometimes teaching resources, too. This is a sub-page of the Project Gutenberg site. http://promo.net/pg/other_gen.html (This link has been removed, but clicking here will give you an interesting choice of options)
Luminarium Mediaeval resources http://www.luminarium.org/lumina.htm
Edgar Allen Poe Vast range of hyperlinks on Poe's works, life and influence. Excellent standard of material. http://dcls.org/x/archive/poe.html
Labyrinth Library: Middle English A good selection of sites relating to medieval studies and Middle English in particular. Includes such classics as ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ as well as fascinating archive material. http://www.georgetown.edu/labyrinth/library/me/me.html
The Yellow Wallpaper Site Charlotte Perkins Gilman: 'The Yellow Wallpaper'. Excellent hyperlinks page constructed by high school students, including Gilman's piece 'Why I Wrote TYW'. Text of story also included. Online message board allows students to post replies to questions about the story - used successfully with Year 10.

 Activity

Task 17

  1. Review some of the sites above and note down the ones you feel your department may find most useful in terms of current schemes of work.
  2. Download some of the information from the authors and use it as a preliminary to discussing a text or to reinforce thematic emphasis.
  3. Order some texts over the Internet - you may be surprised at some of the savings you can make!
  4. Set some of your students a library task on the Internet. For example, researching what a Narwhal is for a presentation in relation to ' When the Whales Came'.
