USING ICT TO DELIVER SUBJECT SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Numeracy

Key Stage 1

Year Group:

Year 1

Topic:

Shape
and Space

(ICT QCA Scheme Unit 1D Labelling and classifying)

Background Information

For example: What previous knowledge will the pupils have? Will the activity take place in the classroom or in a computer suite?

Will have started to become familiar with the names of 2D shapes such as square, triangle, rectangle, circle and hexagon. Will have experience of using a word bank or selecting objects in a drawing package and relocating them by clicking and dragging. Could take place in a suite or be an activity for a group in the classroom within the Numeracy hour.

Teaching/Learning Objectives

Pupils should: Use everyday language to describe familiar 2D shapes.

[ICT: Use key words to label and classify objects]

Resources required

Template presenting children with a number of 2D shapes and a word bank of keywords and phrases that can be selected to create labels to describe a chosen shape [e.g. round, sides, corners]. Box of 2D shapes.

Methodology & Organisation

Whole class teaching session followed by children working in pairs. Begin with the children seated in front of a large screen or a reasonable size monitor being taught as a whole class. The children would then work in pairs on task .

Introduction: Show the children different 2D shapes and ask them to describe them, referring to the number of sides, number of corners, whether all some or none of the sides are the same size and whether sides are straight or curved. Ask children in turn to pick a shape and describe it to the class, the class then guess which shape they have chosen. Explain ICT task, demonstrating how to locate and open the template.

Task: Using prepared template, select a shape, select words from the word bank to create a label to describe their shape. Print out their work.

Plenary: Some children read out their labels and the rest of the class guess which shape they chose on the computer.

Differentiation (Opportunities for SEN)

Greater level of support for SEN children. Template with smaller word bank (e.g. simply for describing number of sides and corners).
