ICT Activities

Unit 1a Year 1

Title: Moving Pictures

Using a simple painting package ask the children to draw their moving picture.

Scan in the completed moving pictures illustrating the story. The children could be asked to use a keyboard to type, or a microphone to record their story.

Unit 1b Year 1

Title: Playgrounds

Visit a local playground and take digital photographs of the equipment found there. Load the images into a computer and ask the children to use the keyboard/prepared word bank to label the equipment.

Carry out a survey of the children's favourite items of playground equipment. Use simple graphing software to present their results as a pictogram and analyse them.

Using a simple painting package ask the children to create their own playground scenes using stamps or clip art.

Unit 1c Year 1

Title: Eat more fruit and vegetables

Collect different fruit and vegetables. Using a prepared word bank containing the names, shapes, sizes, textures and colours of the fruit and vegetables, ask the children to click on the appropriate words to describe their chosen piece. Ask each child to label their object and print the information.

Use a digital camera to scan in images of different fruits and vegetables. Ask the children to use the keyboard/prepared word bank to label the fruits and vegetables. Print the work.

Unit 1d Year 1

Title: Homes

Use a digital camera to take photographs of the different buildings in the local environment or collect pictures of homes and houses from around the world. Using a prepared word bank containing the names, shapes, sizes, building materials and colours etc. ask the children to click on the appropriate words from the word bank to describe a building. Ask each child to label their photograph and print the information.

Unit 2a Year 2

Title: Vehicles

Ask the children to use a drawing or painting package to design a label or logo for their vehicle. Show the children how they can select an appropriate font, style, size and colour.

Create a 3d map of the local area. Ask the children to control the movements of a turtle around the map and send it on different errands (using single instructions, a sequence of instructions and repeated sequences).

Unit 2b Year 2

Title: Puppets

Ask the children to use a drawing package to draw and design their puppet. Using the flood fill tool encourage them to experiment with different colours and effects.

Scan in photographs of the finished puppets. Ask the children to use the image to illustrate a story about their character.

Unit 2c Year 2

Title: Winding up

Create a 3d scene using props from a rhyme or story, e.g. Incy Wincy Spider. Ask the children to control the movements of a floor turtle around the scene as it is send on different missions (using single instructions, a sequence of instructions and repeated sequences).

Unit 2d Year 2

Title: Joseph's coat

Use a drawing package to draw and design Joseph's coat. Using the flood fill tool ask the children to experiment with different colours, patterns and effects.

Use a graphics package to develop an image using a variety of tools, including copy and paste, rotation and reflection. Children could import images from different sources such as clip art, scanners or digital cameras.

Unit 3a Year 3

Title: Packaging

Using a graphics package ask the children to design a logo for their product using simple tools (pen, brush, fill and spray).

Use a graphics package to explore the impact of their product name using different fonts, sizes, styles and colours.

Ask the children to design their packaging combining text and graphics. They could draw their own images or use imported images from clip art, the Internet, scanner or digital camera.

Unit 3b Year 3

Title: Sandwich snacks

Search the Internet to find out about healthy diets and the nutritional value and importance of different foods. Try searching under FOOD at www.yahooligans.com

Carry out a survey of the children's favourite sandwich fillings. Collate findings in a database and present results as bar graphs and pie charts.

Ask the children to design a label for their sandwich combining text and graphics. They could include information about the nutritional value of their chosen ingredients.

Unit 3c Year 3

Title: Moving monsters

Ask the children to use a drawing package to draw their monster. Ask them to label their design, indicating which parts will move, how they will move and what materials they will need to make their monster.

Using digital photographs of their finished monster children could write a story about their monster using the photographs to illustrate their work.

Unit 3d Year 3

Title: Photograph frames

Use a drawing package to draw and design a photograph frame. Using the shape tools ask the children to explore the effect of different shape frames. Using the flood fill tool to experiment with a variety of colours, patterns and effects.

Using a digital camera children could import photographs into their frame design in order to evaluate the impact of their final design before making a final decision.

Ask the children to label the drawing of their photograph frame, including preferences in colour and design.

Unit 4a Year 4

Title: Money containers

Use a graphics package to develop an repeating pattern design for their fabric using a variety of tools, including copy and paste, rotation and reflection.

Children could import images from different sources such as clip art, the Internet, scanners or digital cameras.

Choose tests to carry out on different materials in order to help decide on a suitable fabric for a container. Collect data in a way that aids entry into a data handling package and use it to sort and find information about the fabrics.

Unit 4b Year 4

Title: Storybooks

Using a word processing package ask the children to write and present their storybook, using different fonts, sizes and styles appropriate to their chosen audience.

They could use copy, cut and paste to organise and edit their work as they develop their story, and decide which text is appropriate to each page.

Children could combine text and graphics to illustrate their story using scanned images, digital photographs, clip art or images from the Internet.

Unit 4d Year 4

Title: Alarms

Using a basic control box ask the children to write simple procedures to control output devices, such as lights, buzzers and motors.

Using a control box show the children how to use input devices to control a process, e.g. how to programme a light sensor or pressure pad so that when it detects some sort of change it activates a light and/or a buzzer.

Unit 4e Year 4

Title: Lighting it up (replaces 4c)

Use the Internet or CD-ROMs to find out about different kinds of light.

Using a basic control box ask the children to write simple procedures to control an output device, such as a lamp, motor or buzzer.

Title: Musical instruments

Use the Internet or CD-ROMs to find out about different musical instruments.

Ask questions about different musical instruments, e.g. What materials were used to make it? Is it solid or hollow? What part makes the noise? Collect data in a way that aids entry into a data handling package and use it to sort and find information about the different instruments.

In using the database encourage the children to interpret, check and question the data they have collected and entered.

Using a database on musical instruments ask the children to search for information using two or more criteria and to carry out more complex searches to check hypotheses, e.g. are all instruments made of wood hollow?

Unit 5b Year 5

Title: Bread

Use the Internet or CD-ROMs to find out about different types of bread (from around the world) and how bread is made.

Survey the types and amounts of bread eaten and the form in which it is eaten (e.g. toast/sandwich) over a week and use a spreadsheet to record and analyse the results.

Unit 5c Year 5

Title: Moving toys

Using a basic control box ask the children to write simple procedures to control an output device, such as a motor to operate the cam on their moving toy. They could also include light and sound outputs.

Unit 5d Year 5

Title: Biscuits

Carry out a survey of different biscuits collecting information on appearance, shape, cost, flavour and texture. Include information on the ingredients. Enter the data collected into a data handling package and ask the children to search for information using two or more criteria and to carry out more complex searches to check hypotheses, e.g. Do only savoury biscuits contain salt?

Unit 6a Year 6

Title: Shelters

Carry out a survey of different shelters collecting information on materials used, how has the shelter been made, who will use it etc. Enter the data collected into a data handling package and ask the children to search for information using two or more criteria and to carry out more complex searches to check hypotheses, e.g. Do the strongest shelters have an A-frame?

Unit 6b Year 6

Title: Slippers

Using a multimedia program ask the children to record the process involved in the design and making of their slippers, including any research undertaken, plans, stages of making and evaluations. They could illustrate their work by scanning in drawings and photographs.

Unit 6c Year 6

Title: Fairground

Using a control box ask the children to write simple procedures to control a fairground model, e.g. can you programme a switch so that when a 'gate to a ride' closes it activates a motor that operates the ride. The children could also include lights and buzzers and program the motor to increase and decrease the speed of the ride.

Unit 6d Year 6

Title: Controllable vehicles

Using a control box ask the children to write simple procedures to operate their car, e.g. by activating a switch they 'turn on' the car's motor and program its movement. They could also include lights and buzzers.
